Africa Ethiopia Oromo Wedding Headdress Rare Antique

This is a very rare and unusual piece. It is likely from the early 1900s to 1940s.

We have had it in our possession since the mid 1960s before we envisioned that one day we would live and work in Ethiopia for several years. During our time in Ethiopia in the early 1070s we undertook research in a village that included Oromo people, which is the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia.

This rare Oromo Wedding Headdress is 68 inches long, 14 inches wide at the shoulder and 8 inches wide down the back of the Headdress. It is covered in cowrie shells. A similar Oromo Wedding Headdress is in the Indianapolis Indiana Museum of Art. A truly unique piece of cultural history and art.
