This is an EXTREMELY rare Viking ceremonial Bearded Axe Head. Axe heads in Viking times were very common, everyone including the most common had one of some sort and size, but this axe head was created for a specific Viking warrior and to be buried with him. Making these ceremonial axe head some of the rarest of all.
This axe measures 3.25"x1.75", and is completely solid. I have large hands and added the pic holding it so you can hand a better idea of its size. Over 10 years ago when I aquire this axe head it was a big encrusted clump with very little sign of being an axe head. I spent many hours cleaning it and getting it to be the beautiful piece it is today.
I did seal it with museum wax at the time, but eventually all cleaned iron antiquities need some up keep, and this is no different. It shows faint signs of rust in a few areas, but can easily be cleaned and preserved. I didn't notice the rust until taking the photos. So I used olive oil to soak the rust, removed what loose rust I could, and wiped out clean.
Which will temporarily seal it and stop the rust. Interestingly the rust is pretty much all on one side, the side that was facing up for display. This is a great item for any Viking or antiquity collection! I have a lot of other antiquities and very old- ancient keys listed as well, so please take a look at my other auctions.
So feel free to take as many as you like! Hello, I'm Storm and all of my items are from my personal collection and 100% genuine/authentic.My collection is always growing so I need to scale it down some. I'm in no hurry to sell anything, and I hope and expect to get what I believe is fair for them or I just won't sell it. I've collected antiquities for 30+ years. Long before I ever bought antiquities on here. I can't be the only one that looks through a sellers antiquities only to see 90%+ of the items are fake, and bad fakes at that!
That's shocking because it means that all of the buyers are unaware that they bought and possess fakes. I've reported the sellers of all fake items and watched nothing happen. Some things for buyers to beware of. I do find that most sellers I see with genuine artifacts are in the Ukraine and some in the UK. That's not to say they aren't in other countries too, but this is what I've learned.
There are many bronze, iron, and silver antiquities that come from molds, but most are of the more commonly produced items and aren't exactly rare. They will never be worn down the same, and any damage will greatly differ from one item to the next. Try to learn what real bronze patinas look like as there are several different colors, but also know that patinas are extremity tough/hard. Often times looking closely at bronze patinas and seeing some of it chipped is an easy way to identify an authentic item. Fake patinas can usually be rubbed or wiped off. Many of my items came directly from metal detectorist and still contained lots of build up that I needed to clean off. Some weren't even if identifiable upon seeing pictures, and once cleaned I ended up with many extraordinary one of a kind or very rare pieces. The cleaning took time and effort, but I miss those days!
All of my items are 100% guaranteed to be original antiquities. My descriptions come mainly from the location that they were detected/found, the detectorists info on it, and also my own personal knowledge and research. Feel free to message me with any questions and I'll get back to you with an answer ASAP.
