For sale is the beautiful extremely rare engraving by Crispijn van de Passe. VAN DE PASSE, Crispin, the Elder. The engraver was born 1564 died 1637 so this piece could be within the late 1500s or early 1600s timeframe.
Note: the first photo is cropped and edited to remove background, showing the paper itself more prominently. This engraving is very hard to find much information on, this particular engraving has lettering all along. The circle describing what is depicted. A man standing above a distressed woman to the right sitting, appears. To be crying or worried, etc. The Man is dressed in old noble attire wielding a sheathed saber at his hip with a small boy similarly dressed to the left of him with a lance or spear and shield. In the background appears some type of base compound and more cavalry, to the right is castle front and gate with a bucking bull. The words along the circle by information available is possibly in Latin. Front and center at the top is "XXX" which is part of the series. The best information available is that it is from a series most likely "AGES OF MAN" which depict different portions of life of man from birth to death. There is roman numerals for each engraving in the series with this one being "XXX" or 30. No translation is readily available but I will transcribe to the best of my ability below from the XXX clockwise. XXX - Coeperit aft juuenile decus cum pingere malas, Fit robufta aetas ardet uella magis. Feruidus arma petit, patrij non degener oris : Colla Vti Taurus Atrox fubtrahit atque jugo. The text describes the scene with'juuenile' possibly being juvenile (young, youth) for the woman and Taurus referring to the Bull in the background. The paper is clearly very very old and original, this is framed possibly in the 80s or 90s by "Art Services" in Los Angeles. The paper engraving itself is below. Engraving: 5.5" x 6" - the frame is 11"x 11". Can be taken out and reframed if desired but I did NOT at all attempt to tamper with the current framing, the felt material on the outer square is a bit stained in some places mostly the bottom left. The engraving unfortunately has a bit of brownish spotting as visible in some photos mostly along the 5 o'clock area, tried my best to show all angels to better showcase exact condition with the glass. The engraving sits recessed within the frame under the glass and you can see the edges corners slightly raised so it is not being squished or pressed down it was professionally framed, previous owner of this piece kept it framed until my acquisition. I included a video to showcase the details better. Has wire on the back for hanging. Listing at BEST OFFER, but PLEASE do not make extremely unreasonable offers they will be blocked and declined.
