Total length from top shoulder to bottom: 107 cm/ 42. Exceptionally rare vintage leather trench coat, made in Australia, probably circa WWI (could be later, but certainly around the early part of the 20th century). This classic leather trench coat is typical of those worn by men in the early 20th Century. Trench coats were developed in the first word war to be worn by allied soldiers as a windbreaker and raincoat. They were made of leather or the newly invented cotton gabardine, a tough, tightly woven, water resistant fabric.

After the war many veterans kept their trench coats and the style became fashionable with the wider community. This example has the classic features of a trench coat; 2 rows of buttons, wide lapels, raglan sleeves with a wrist strap, angled welt pockets and a buckled belt. It is made of thick leather, is double breasted and can be buttoned all the way up to the neck to protect against the wind and rain. It also has a press-studded tab on the outside of the cuff to tighten it at the wrist as well....

This is all about the leather, and the superbly crafted design style. The leather is absolutely amazing - it is thick and tough in places, but still very pliable and quite supple overall, and features incredible grain, vein and tonal variations, wrinkling, scarring and a unique patina that has been developed over the past century.

This a very old school style of coat, which has been hand-crafted to last a very long time, is heavy-duty, and weighs around 2.5 kg. There are no labels on this, but the press-down button studs on the leather tabs on the cuffs, are stamped with a very interesting logo/insignia, showing a knot being tied, with a letter'S' in the centre. The words "Australian Make" are also stamped around the circumference of the red button. On the other side, the metal rim is also stamped, but it has "Made in England", which can just be made out.

There are also two very interesting, old style studs, on each cuff, where the button can be pressed down into. This coat is double-breasted, with 4 buttons down the front, which can be done up (including the top collar/lapel button). The original belt is also included, and this coat can be worn with, or without the belt, which can be removed.

There are also 2 welted side pockets. There is no lining, as the interior is the raw suede leather reverse of the exterior.

Although this leather coat is very old, and showing plenty of signs of wear, it is in very good condition, and has been made - not only to last many decades, but will last for centuries, if looked after. There are some water stains in places, but they tend to blend in with the general wear, grain marks, veins and patination. There is a small split in the seam of the collar, at the back (see last photo for close-up detail).

This can easily be repaired, but is unlikely to get any worse, if left as it is. Old leather trench coats like this, rarely come up for sale. They are the sort of coats that were worn by WWI and WWII fighter pilots, and army officers, and motor cyclists from the early part of the 20th century, so they get passed down as heirlooms. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Don't miss out on this very rare antique/vintage leather trench coat. Check out my other items. As I have many other leather jackets and coats available.
